Our History: Then and Now
Then: Father Willhelm (now deceased) was joined by Father Leroy Smith (President of the Center) in early 1993. After Father Smith's first trip to Medjugorje in 1988, he formed a prayer group consisting of just 10 members. This prayer group, now located at the Center, selected "Gospa" as their name and moved with Fr. Smith as his assignments changed. Through the leadership of Fr. Willhelm and Fr. Smith, the former seminary has seen a gradual metamorphosis, slowly regaining its physical and spiritual grandeur. The Center was consecrated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and named Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center on May 1, 1993.
Now: It is now a center for special devotions to our Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit, and Marian activity. The Center will offer priests many opportunities:
a place for directed spiritual guidance, a place of spiritual and physical renewal, community with other priests, and a permanent residence. Priests meet in prayer cenacles monthly and many of them aid in the spiritual focus of the laity. As a Marian Center for peace, we promote personal spiritual development especially through traditional Marian and Holy Spirit devotions. The Center offers individuals unique opportunities: a place to renew, strengthen, and share their faith. A haven of rest from the demands of the world,
the Center's faith community joins in a variety of traditional Catholic prayers, devotions, worship services, and educational activities. Eucharistic adoration, life in the Spirit, and quiet prayer and contemplation are nurtured here.
